Modern conical and flat burr grinders throw out static-charged clumps. Those clumps create dense pockets in the puck. Water, being lazy, races around the dense spots and blasts straight through the loose ones.

A WDT tool doesn’t compress or dose your coffee. It only redistributes what’s already in the basket. Think of it as combing tangles out of hair before you style it.

The needle gauge is the whole game
People obsess over the handle and ignore the part that does the work. The needles are what matter, and thickness is everything.

The whole thing takes 8 to 10 seconds once it’s muscle memory. Any longer and you’re overthinking it.

That last row trips people up. A flat-bottomed distributor that screws across the top of the puck is not a WDT tool. It smooths the surface but leaves the clumps underneath untouched.
What WDT won’t fix
I have to say this because I get asked weekly: WDT is not a cure-all. It solves distribution problems. It does nothing for the wrong grind or the wrong dose.

Same with over-extraction. If your shot runs long and tastes harsh, no amount of needle work saves it – that’s a bitter over-extraction fix, usually a grind or ratio change.
