The oils are the real enemy. Coffee is roughly 15% oil by weight in the bean, and those oils are what go rancid. That’s the ashtray taste. It isn’t the beans and it isn’t scale – it’s old fat baked onto steel at 200°F, shot after shot.

Reassembly without the leaks

Put the parts back in the order they came off: dispersion screen first, then the group gasket if it lives there, then the shower screen, then the screw.

Torque matters more than people expect. Snug the central screw firm but not cranked – think the tension you’d use on a pair of eyeglasses, not a lug nut. Over-tightening warps the thin screen into a dome, and then water pools in the center and channels around the edge. If you have a torque driver, 1.5 to 2 Nm is right; by hand, stop the moment it seats.

Check the gasket while you’re in there

The group gasket is a rubber ring, usually around $4 to $8. If yours is flattened, cracked, or rock-hard, replace it now while everything is apart.
