The first Gaggia Classic I ever opened on the bench had a boiler so caked in scale it looked like the inside of a kettle in a hard-water town. The owner had run it daily for four years and never once descaled it, because – his words – “there’s no button for it.” He’s not wrong. Gaggia never gave the Classic a descale mode.

That missing button is exactly why so many of these machines end up with clogged boilers and dying solenoid valves. People assume a machine will tell them when it needs cleaning. This one won’t.

So you do it by hand, driving the pump and the steam valve yourself. It takes about 45 minutes start to finish, and once you’ve done it twice you’ll never think about it again.

Why the Gaggia Classic Needs a Manual Descale

Espresso is brewed by forcing water at around 9 bar of pressure and roughly 200°F through a puck of coffee. That water passes through a small aluminium or brass boiler, and every drop leaves behind a trace of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Over months, that trace becomes a crust.

On the Classic, scale collects in three places that matter: the boiler walls, the heating element, and the tiny brass ports feeding the solenoid valve and steam wand. When those ports narrow, flow drops and shot times creep up.

The reason you can’t just flush water through and call it done is contact time. Scale is a mineral deposit – it dissolves slowly, and only when acidic solution sits against it. A machine with a descale program handles that soak automatically. Here, you create the soak yourself.

The current Gaggia Classic Evo (2023 onward) uses a fully brass boiler, while older RI9403 and 2015-era models used aluminium. The routine is identical, but aluminium boilers are a little more sensitive to strong acid, so stick to the recommended dilution.

What You’ll Need Before You Start

Nothing here is exotic. Most of it you already have on the shelf next to the machine.

  • A descaling agent – either a proprietary espresso descaler ($8-15 a bottle) or food-grade citric acid powder (about $10 for a pound, which lasts years)
  • A jug of at least 1 liter for catching runoff
  • Fresh cold water for the rinse phase – plan on 2 full tanks
  • A shot glass or small cup under the steam wand
  • The portafilter, empty and locked in with no basket coffee
  • A cloth and 20 minutes of not touching the machine while it soaks

If you’re mixing citric acid, use roughly 30 grams per liter of warm water. Stir until it’s fully dissolved – undissolved crystals do nothing and can settle in the tank.

Safety first

Never use household white vinegar in a Gaggia Classic. It works on scale, but the acetic acid attacks the silicone group-head gasket and the internal O-rings over repeated use, and the smell lingers in the boiler for weeks. Citric acid is gentler on seals and rinses clean.

Step by Step: Descaling the Gaggia Classic

Work through this in order. The machine does the pumping; you’re just flipping switches at the right moments.

1. Empty and fill the tank

Power off and unplug. Remove the water tank, tip out whatever’s in it, and pour in your descaling solution. Drop the tank back on and make sure the pickup hose is seated in the liquid.

Lock the empty portafilter into the group. You’re descaling the brew path, not making coffee, so no basket coffee goes in.

2. Run solution through the brew head

Plug in and switch on the power, but leave the brew switch off for now – let it heat for about 60 seconds so the pump primes cleanly. Then flip the brew switch and let solution run through the group head into your jug.

Pull roughly 300ml through, then switch off. You’ve now filled the boiler and brew path with active solution.

3. Push solution through the steam wand

This is the step most people skip, and it’s why their steam wand still spits after a “descale.” Turn the steam switch on, wait for it to come up to temperature, then open the steam knob and let solution hiss out of the wand for 15-20 seconds into a cup.

Close the knob, switch off steam. The wand path and the steam boiler ports now have solution sitting in them too.

Pro tip

If your steam wand barely trickles even with solution behind it, the tip is scaled shut. Unscrew the tip (it’s usually a 10mm nut) and soak it separately in a cup of the same solution for 20 minutes – you’ll be surprised how much comes out.

4. Let it soak

Switch the machine fully off and walk away for 15 to 20 minutes. This is the contact time that actually dissolves the scale. Nothing you do in the first three steps matters much without this pause.

Scale doesn’t come off with pressure. It comes off with patience – acid, contact, and time.

5. Repeat once

After the soak, run another 300ml through the brew head and another 15 seconds through the wand. On a badly scaled machine I’ll do this cycle two or three times, refilling with solution as the tank drops. You’ll sometimes see fine white flakes in the runoff – that’s exactly what you want to see leaving the machine.

Rinsing: The Part People Rush

Descaler left in the boiler will make your next shots taste sour and metallic, and it can corrode aluminium over time. So the rinse matters as much as the descale.

Dump any remaining solution, rinse the tank, and fill it with clean cold water. Now repeat the whole flow – brew head, then steam wand – but with plain water.

Plan on running at least 1.5 to 2 full tanks through this way. Taste the water coming out of the group with a clean spoon; when it tastes like plain water with no tartness, you’re done. On my own Classic that’s usually the back half of the second tank.

Good to know

The Specialty Coffee Association recommends brewing water with a hardness around 50-175 ppm. If your tap water sits well above that, a simple inline or pitcher filter will roughly double the time between descales. You can read the SCA’s water standards at sca.coffee.

How Often, and How to Tell It’s Time

There’s no light on the Classic, so you watch for symptoms instead.

The early warning signs are a longer heat-up time, weaker flow from the group, and a steam wand that used to roar and now just wheezes. A pump that suddenly sounds louder or more strained is often working against a partly blocked boiler port.

Descaling Is Not Backflushing – Do Both

I get this question weekly, so it’s worth clearing up. Descaling removes mineral scale from inside the boiler and water path. Backflushing pushes water and detergent backward through the group to clear coffee oils and grounds from the shower screen and solenoid.

Keeping Your Classic Off My Bench

A Gaggia Classic that gets descaled on schedule and backflushed weekly will outlive most of the machines that cost three times as much. The one that came in caked like a kettle? I cleared it, but the aluminium boiler had already pitted where the scale sat, and it never held temperature quite the same.

Do the 45-minute routine before you can taste that something’s off, not after. Mark it on a calendar, tie it to a season change, whatever makes you remember – because this machine will never remind you itself.
